Cities destroyed by the earthquake will be built again
With strong determination and firm steps, the destroyed cities will be rebuilt by the government, as Turkey faces the hardships and destruction left by the devastating earthquake that struck the south of the country on February 6, 2023, and left great damage and loss of life.
A quick response from the Turkish government to the horrors left by the earthquake and the great destruction it caused, which led to the loss of hundreds of thousands of people of their homes, appeared from the speech of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in one of the press conferences and inspection tours that he has done since the devastating earthquake struck the region, where he announced that during the month of March, less than a month after the earthquake, constructions will begin for the cities destroyed by the earthquake.
As for the party that will be responsible for the reconstruction of these cities, Erdoğan said, “Our construction company,TOKİ, which we established with the sweat of our brows, and whose buildings were not damaged by any earthquake, is now continuing to make the necessary preparations for construction quickly”.
How many houses will TOKİ rebuild in destroyed cities?
In the details of what will be built, the Turkish president stated that 40,426 houses will be built in the city of Hatay, 45,077 houses in Kahramanmaraş, and 25,882 houses in the city of Adıyaman.
Also, 18,544 houses will be built in Gaziantep, 44,770 houses in Malatya, 9,550 houses in Osmaniye, and 6,000 houses in Diyarbakır.
In addition, 3,000 houses will be built in Şanlıurfa, 3,750 in Elazığ, 2,500 in Adana, and 250 in Kilis.
As the losses continue to be restrained, rubble is lifted, and suitable construction sites are determined, Erdoğan has confirmed a rise in the number of homes being constructed within each city.
Also during his speech, Turkish President Erdoğan stressed that these cities – which were hit by the devastating earthquake – will be built from scratch, adding that “we are not talking about consolidation or strengthening operations or the like; Rather, we will build all the places that were demolished from scratch in order to secure housing for all our citizens in these houses in peace.”
It doesn’t stop at that, Erdoğan explained that Turkish banks will be canceling the debts of all the deceased due to the earthquake, as for the people who have lost everything in the earthquake, Erdoğan said, “those who lost cows will be compensated with cows, and those who lost sheep will be compensated with sheep, and those who lost chickens will be compensated with chickens, and those who lost bees will be compensated with bees, we will return the same number to them without anything in return”.
In addition, “we will deposit cash support into their accounts at the end of February, instead of the in-kind support we provide of diesel and fertilizer,” according to the Turkish president.
