New Canal Istanbul.. The story from the beginning
The idea of constructing Canal Istanbul dates back to the sixteenth century, to the era of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent “1520-1568”, the architect Mi’mâr Sinân proposed the idea to the sultan, and after him the project was adopted by many sultans, but it did not see the light for financial reasons in the first place, and was suspended until it was proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2011, who was then Prime Minister.

Canal Istanbul.. The alternative option to the Bosphorus Strait
19 thousand ships pass through Canal Suez annually, 13 thousand ships pass through Panama, while 53 thousand ships pass through the Bosphorus Strait annually.
The numbers, cargo, and sizes of ships passing through the Bosphorus Strait are constantly increasing, as are the numbers of ships carrying liquid fuel and dangerous materials, and the possibility of ship collisions.
Navigation in the Bosphorus may increase incase Turkey becomes a main link in the Chinese Silk Road, either as a result of containing Chinese factories or the end of the path of some trains that depart from China towards the Turkish coast to complete the journey by sea towards Europe to shorten the sea distance across the Pacific and Indian Oceans and Canal Suez, and if Turkey has become central to the Silk Road the Bosphorus Strait will be crowded with ships in a manner similar to the center of the world’s major cities because of the crowding.
These reasons are a heavy burden on the Bosphorus, which led to the need to plan a waterway that relieves pressure on this strait and represents an alternative option to the Bosphorus or a complement to the current Turkish straits, which leads to the necessity and importance of the new Canal Istanbul.
A Mad project that will divide European Istanbul into two parts
Canal Istanbul is a waterway parallel to the Bosphorus Strait, 30 kilometers from it to the west.
The canal extends in the west of the country to connect the Black Sea in the north with the Sea of Marmara in the south, with a length of 45 kilometers, a depth of 21 meters, and a width of about 275 meters, and at one point it reaches one kilometer.
The canal starts from Küçükçekmece Lake, which is a natural lake in the Sea of Marmara to the west of Istanbul, and extends north to the Sazlıdere Dam, then the village of Şamlar, all the way to the Black Sea. Thus, the European part of Istanbul will be divided into two parts, the eastern part of which will be an island in the middle of the continents of Asia and Europe.
Economic returns.. $8 Billion annually
In just two years, the revenues of the new Canal Istanbul will cover the costs of the project amounting to about $15 billion, as it will generate about $8 billion annually for Turkey, which will contribute to compensate it for the $10 billion it was deprived of due to the reduced price of passage for ships crossing the Bosphorus Strait according to the Montreux Convention, which declared freedom of passage through the straits of the Black Sea for merchant ships in times of peace and war and allowed the passage of warships of the countries of the Black Sea Basin without any limitation.
According to information provided by the Turkish Ministry of Trade, the Canal will give Turkey a competitive advantage in international transport trade, more than 75% of which passes through the seas.
The New Canal Istanbul.. Heaven for investors around the world
The Istanbul Canal creates golden investment opportunities in the Turkish real estate market, specifically along the two banks of the canal, where the prices of all real estate around the canal increased by leaps and bounds due to its strategic location near very important places such as the new Istanbul airport, the city center and the distinctive sea views, as well as being close to the Canal “the new waterway”.
The area will also witness major projects of commercial centers, health facilities and a strong transportation system, all with a strong and developed infrastructure in an extraordinary way, which will provide thousands of job opportunities and an extraordinary investment activity.
Smart City
“The Canal Istanbul project was not only planned as a waterway, but also as a smart city in a way that contributes to the economy” said Prof. Mustafa Ilicali, Director of Transport Systems Center at Istanbul Ticaret University.
This smart city is built on the basis of horizontal architecture and includes scientific cities, ports for yachts, logistic centers, commercial establishments, coastal facilities and tourist areas,
and it will be built to accommodate 500 thousand people, of whom about 250 thousand people live within the area on which the project will be established, in addition to 250 thousand others who live in areas that could be damaged in the event of a strong earthquake in Istanbul and they could move to Canal Istanbul.
The foundation stone and starting the project
After the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the first bridges of Canal Istanbul, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on June 26, 2021, announcing the actual start of working on the implementation of the canal project, the lands surrounding the canal witnessed a great demand for purchasing and investing in it due to the start of the actual steps to implement the project of the era as described by Turkish President Erdoğan, in addition to the increase in the prices of lands surrounding the canal day after day.
